Glass or polycarbonate: which should you choose for your patio cover?
This is the question we're asked most often. There's no right or wrong answer, just a difference in look, comfort and price. Below are the six points that really matter.
1. Appearance
Glass looks sleek and clear and makes your patio feel bigger. Polycarbonate always has a slight haze, even in the clear version. If a sleek, modern look matters to you, glass is usually the way to go.
2. Light
Clear glass lets in more light than polycarbonate. Opal or coated polycarbonate deliberately lets in less light and so keeps out heat. If your patio faces south, that can be an advantage rather than a drawback.
3. Noise when it rains
Polycarbonate is noticeably louder than glass in a heavy shower. If you want to sit or eat in peace under your patio cover while it's raining, that's a strong argument for glass.
4. Maintenance
Glass stays looking good for longer and is easier to clean. Polycarbonate scratches more easily and can discolour over time, especially cheap sheets without a UV coating.
5. Weight and structure
Glass is heavier and therefore needs a sturdier structure. We already factor this into our calculations: you choose the roof panel and the structure adapts accordingly.
6. Price
Polycarbonate is usually cheaper to buy, but the difference is smaller than people expect and it varies by size and specification. In our 3D configurator you can switch between glass and polycarbonate with one click and instantly see what it costs for your situation. That's fairer than quoting a general figure.
Our recommendation
Do you mainly use your patio in spring and autumn, and do you sit out there in bad weather too? Choose glass. Are you mainly after shade and a keen price, and don't mind the sound of rain? Then polycarbonate is an excellent choice. Still unsure? Visit our showroom in Veldhoven and see both roof panels for real.
