Why a polycarbonate roof? (And when glass is the better choice)
Polycarbonate is an exceptionally strong, light-transmitting plastic that has been used in construction for covers and canopies for many years. It is remarkably light, yet many times more impact-resistant than glass: hail, a falling branch or a ball barely affect it, and it cannot simply shatter. It is precisely this combination of low weight and strength that makes it the most affordable choice: less heavy material, larger spans and easier installation.
A polycarbonate roof lets plenty of light through, can span greater depths than glass and is available in versions that let noticeably less heat through in summer. An honest comparison with a glass roof:
| Polycarbonate | Glass | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | More affordable | Higher |
| Weight | Light, suitable for self-installation | Heavy, installed with a glass lifter |
| Strength | Virtually unbreakable | Toughened, but breakable |
| Maximum depth | Up to approx. 5 metres | Up to approx. 4 metres |
| Heat in summer | Heat-reflecting version available | Warms up more quickly |
| Long-term clarity | Very clear, UV-protected | Crystal clear |
| Maintenance | Low, just rinse off now and then | Low |
In short: choose polycarbonate for the best price, the lowest weight and a large span, ideal if you want to invest wisely and be sitting under cover quickly. Choose glass if a luxurious look and maximum, lasting transparency are top of your list. Alupine supplies both fully made to measure, so you never have to compromise.
Types of polycarbonate roof sheets
Not every polycarbonate sheet is the same. Your choice determines how much light comes through, how much privacy you have and how warm it gets under your cover. We work with sturdy multiwall sheets that are both insulating and strong, in three versions:
Clear polycarbonate
Maximum light: your patio stays bright and open, as if there is hardly anything overhead. Ideal if your garden is north-facing or you want to keep things as bright as possible. The sheets are UV-protected on the top side, so they don't turn yellow.
Opal polycarbonate
Soft, diffused light and more privacy. Bright sunlight is scattered rather than let straight through, so there are no harsh shadows and no one can look in from above. A pleasant choice if you spend a lot of time under the cover on sunny days.
Heat-reflecting polycarbonate
Specially coated to keep radiant heat out in summer, so it stays pleasant under the cover even on hot days. It combines good light with noticeably less heat: the most comfortable choice for a south-facing patio.
Materials & construction: what really matters
A patio cover stands up to wind and weather for decades, so the structure has to be right. That is why we make everything from high-grade aluminium with a baked-on powder coating, a material that doesn't rust, rot or warp, and that keeps its colour and crisp lines for years. The polycarbonate roof sheets are UV-protected on the top side, so they don't turn yellow.
- Structure made of high-grade, weather- and UV-resistant aluminium: it doesn't rust, rot or warp, not even after years outdoors.
- UV-protected polycarbonate roof sheets with a hollow multiwall structure: lightweight, insulating and many times more impact-resistant than glass, virtually unbreakable.
- Sleek powder coating in your RAL colour, baked on and resistant to weather, wind and UV, so you never need to paint.
- Concealed rainwater drainage running through the posts, so there are no unsightly downpipes along your cover and the water is neatly carried away.
- Sturdy wall plate, support beam and posts calculated to your measurements, including the right fixings for your situation.

Dimensions & bespoke sizing, from a small patio to a large span
Everything is made to your measurements, no “pick the nearest standard size and adapt it yourself”. In the 3D configurator you set the width and depth yourself; because polycarbonate is light, it can span greater depths than glass, up to approx. 5 metres. Across the width we join bays together to create generous dimensions, with posts in the right places for a sturdy, uncluttered structure.
We also help you get the headroom right: walking underneath comfortably usually calls for around 2.10 to 2.35 metres of clear height, depending on your façade and roof pitch. Whether you choose a wall-mounted cover or a freestanding one in the middle of the garden, both are possible, and we calculate the number of posts and the beam sizes so that the structure is sound. A centimetre measured wrongly needn't be a problem with us: if you opt for an on-site survey or installation, we take care of the measurements.
Colours & finish
Choose the RAL colour that suits your home and garden, at no extra cost. The sleek, baked-on powder coating stands up to weather, wind and UV, so it still looks just as neat years later.
Options & accessories
A bare cover is a fine start, but with a few clever options you turn it into a place you'll use all year round. You can choose them now or add them later:
LED lighting
Dimmable recessed spotlights in the support beam, so you can enjoy an atmospheric evening outdoors too. Operated by remote control.
Glass sliding walls
Make your cover windproof and use your patio all year round as a true outdoor room. Slides fully out of the way in summer.
Zip screens & sun shading
Protection from bright sun, wind and prying eyes, neatly integrated into the structure and operated by remote control.
Side walls
Extra shelter from rain and wind from the side, in glass, polycarbonate or solid, whichever suits your situation.
Install it yourself or have it installed: your choice
At Alupine you decide how much you hand over. Both routes are fully fledged, so no customer needs to give up because installation seems too difficult or too expensive.
Self-installation (DIY kit)
Polycarbonate is light, so two people can easily install a cover themselves, usually in half a day to a day. You get a clear, step-by-step installation manual and all the materials you need are supplied, neatly labelled. Got a question along the way? We'll help you over the phone.
Installation by Alupine
Rather sit back and relax? Our own installers fit your cover perfectly level, accurately and with a neat finish. You see the installation price in the configurator in advance, so there are no surprises afterwards. One point of contact, everything taken care of: from production to installation.

Maintenance & lifespan
A polycarbonate cover is wonderfully low-maintenance, exactly what you want from something that stands outdoors all year. Rinsing the sheets with lukewarm water a few times a year keeps them clear; for stubborn dirt, use a soft brush with a little mild soap. Avoid harsh cleaning agents and keep a pressure washer at a distance, so the UV layer stays intact.
The aluminium structure lasts for decades and the sheets don't turn yellow thanks to the UV protection. On top of that, you get a 10-year guarantee on the structure and the coating. In short: put it up, enjoy it and hardly give it another thought.
Price & delivery time
Your price depends on your size, the type of roof sheet and the options you choose, which is why the 3D configurator always shows an up-to-date total price at the top as you design. That amount is your final price for the DIY kit: including the aluminium structure, the made-to-measure polycarbonate sheets, the rainwater drainage and the fixings. No hidden costs and no surcharges afterwards.
If you opt for installation by our installers, that is a separate option shown upfront, so you know exactly what you will pay in total beforehand. Delivery usually takes place within 10 to 12 working days, with Track & Trace so you can follow your order; we confirm the exact delivery or installation date after you order.
